Forza Win: First Sundays with Flock & Herd

It's so long since I last wrote a blog post that you'd be forgiven for wondering if I've forgotten what one even is! Well I haven't, don't worry. And, what's more, I've written one! It's a very special one too, because a few Sundays ago Tom and I witnessed the beautiful union of two beings that were absolutely made for each other.

Secret Cinema presents Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (no spoilers, promise!)

A short time ago, we visited a galaxy far far away when we took part in Secret Cinema's incredible production of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. I'm not going to say too much because the less you know the better (the key is in the name), but if you've also got a ticket/are thinking of getting one, I've got a few tips that will hopefully assist you on your journey to new worlds.

Street Feast at Dalston Yard

This is going to sound weird but, as much as I love street food markets, I also fear them. So it was with a mixture of excitement and trepidation that I recently went to Dalston Yard Street Feast...

The Line: London's new art walk

You can all stop panicking now people, I'm back!

Sooo I haven't blogged for quite a while, but I promise I have good reasons. I mentioned a few months ago that I was doing a diploma at the Institute of Art and Law. Well, we were assigned our final two essays at the beginning of April, to be handed in at the end of June. Naturally, I kept telling myself that I had looooaaaads of time, and then all of a sudden there was only a month left and I had to spend every spare minute frantically writing about the nationalisation of artefacts and whatnot. I put blogging, running and fun of any kind on hold.

And, err, once I'd handed them, for a while the last thing I wanted to do was write, so I've spent a few weeks just overdosing on life and making up for all FOMO. It's time to get back to it now though, and I thought it was only apt that I write about something arty such as The Line, London's first ever modern and contemporary art walk.

Teatime treats and time travel

We got up to a bit of travelling recently, both geographically and temporally, when we went for brunch at Blackbird Tea Rooms in Brighton.

The finer things

I've always thought that being an art dealer would be my ideal career. Imagine spending your days immersed in the world's creative history, seeking out beautiful paintings, prints and drawings and buying priceless objects with other people's money! Yep, that's the role for me. Unfortunately, I lack the background (went and studied law instead of history of art), the contacts (all the people I know and love can just about stretch to posters from Ikea) and, crucially, the massive stash of dollar required to get on the art dealership ladder.

Shackfuyu

I've been wondering if the world needs another review of Shackfuyu, since everyone and their dog has already blogged about it. But I had a bloody good time when I went there recently, so I'm writing about it anyway.

An ode to running

I RAN THE BRIGHTON MARATHON YESTERDAY!!! It was my first ever marathon, so I thought this would be a good time to dedicate a post to one of the things I love the most (ooh I rhymed! That’s as much as you’re going to get though, despite the title. This isn’t an actual ode because you just witnessed the limit of my poetry skills).

Market stalls and miniatures

I've got a thing about tiny stuff. I'm drawn to anything that's smaller than usual, like travel bottles of shampoo, those 50p-sized paella keyrings that you buy as last-minute souvenirs in Spanish airports, puppies, canapés...You get the idea.

So that's why I'm a huge fan of Slinkachu's miniscule sculptures, and when I found out that Andipa Gallery was exhibiting his work I had to go and have a look. A really close up look.

Beer & Buns

I tried something a little bit different last week and went to a newish, long-term pop-up called Beer & Buns. It does exactly what it says on the tin, as long as you don't assume that "Buns" is a reference to burgers. Or iced ones. Or bottoms.

No, these are steamed hirata buns, served in a Japanese-style izakaya. Read on for a translation...

A lido and a lookalike

It would take a whole blog post to explain where I'm "from" (we moved around A LOT), so whenever anyone asks I just make it simple and say that I'm from London. The five years that I've lived here is the longest I've been in one city since I was small, so I reckon that qualifies me. For the first three of those years I lived in various places in North London, but two years ago I moved south of the river by chance and have never looked back.

You're probably wondering where I'm going with this. Well, I'm going saaaf and I'm taking you with me, so I can show you where to get great brunch and see some smashing art in my little bit of London.

Soul-searching and Cinnamon Buns

Hey. Apologies for the hiatus, I'm doing an extracurricular course in art law and we had an essay due this week (can't believe I'm voluntarily writing essays now. Who even am I?!?!).

Anyway, so you know Grayson Perry? He's an actual living legend. We have this game that we play at Christmas, where we go around the table and each person says which celebrities are driving their "love" and "hate" buses. This Christmas just gone, Perry was unanimously voted our "love" bus driver. He's making art accessible in the most inventive ways, and guess what! He currently has an exhibition on in London...

Full English and Fine Art

Happy new year everyone! I hope you had a wonderful festive season and that 2015 is treating you well so far. Most of my resolutions this year are easily achievable things that I was going to do anyway, to make myself feel virtuous and smug. I did make one serious commitment though, and that's to go to more exhibitions. And to go earlier than the day they finish, which is what usually happens.

So in that fuzzy period between Christmas and New Year, when the sofa has begun to mould itself around your body and eating chocolate for breakfast is starting to seem weird again, Tom and I dragged ourselves out to the big one...the Late Turner exhibition at Tate Britain.
